This drug is used to treat infestation with threadworms of small intestine, due to nematode parasite strongyloides stercoralis, river blindness due to nematode parasite Onchocera volvulus.
Side effects of this drug can include decreased blood pressure, mild ECG changes, swelling, dizziness, headache, increased body temperature, sleeplessness, drowsiness, vertigo, itching, rash, redness, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, increased eosinophils, decreased WBC’s, increased ALT/AST, eye inflammation, muscular pain, tremor, weakness, blurred vision, mild conjuctivitis, and cataracts.
The risk cannot be ruled out with this drug. Please consult your physician before starting this drug.
This drug is contraindicated in lactation, and hence should not be given in lactating mothers.
May cause skin and/or systemic reactions of varying severity including eye reactions in patient with river blindness. Repeated treatment may be required in patients with decreased immunity. Pretreatment assessment for loa infection is recommended in any patient with significant exposure to endemic areas. Safety and efficacy in children below 15 kg body weight have not been established.
This drug should not be given if there is a known hypersensitivity to ivermectin or any other component of the formulation.
